Dr. Deborah Hill built her career around helping people overcome physical limitations, but her work eventually led to an unexpected approach to weight management. As a board-certified Doctor of Chiropractic in Los Angeles, she spent years treating patients at West Burbank Chiropractic Center and developing Myoprobe Therapy®, a hands-on, drug-free technique used to address arthritis pain and restore movement in frozen shoulders and hips.
The unexpected connection between pain management and weight control emerged through her work with patients. While teaching simple mind-body exercises designed to help people manage discomfort, Hill noticed something unusual. Some patients returned for subsequent appointments having lost noticeable amounts of weight. When asked about dietary changes, they often reported that they were not following a new diet. Instead, they simply no longer felt the same urge to overeat.
That observation became the foundation for the Shield Method. Hill’s central idea was that people already possess a powerful form of automatic self-control. She compares it with the mental focus people use while driving on Los Angeles freeways, where drivers routinely travel at high speeds near large vehicles while remaining relaxed and attentive. Her work explores whether that same type of comfortable control can be applied to eating behavior.
Early participant experiences helped shape the method further. Kathryn J., for example, reported losing 22 pounds over two months and described the experience as emotionally healthy and easy. Judith L. said she could eat half a dinner while feeling satisfied even when others continued eating.
The development of the Shield Method therefore grew from an observation made during chiropractic care rather than from a conventional diet program. Hill’s background in hands-on therapy, combined with her interest in the mind-body connection, ultimately led her toward a different approach to behavioral control. Today, the online Shield Method course is offered free to the first 500 qualified applicants during the launch, compared with its stated regular price of $1,999. An introductory lesson is also available through the program’s website.
